Default Telephone contract in Owner's or Tenant's name?

    Hi,

Does anyone know whether it can be dangerous to let their tenant set up a telephone/internet contract in their name? I'm worried that if they don't pay their bill and leave then it will be my responsibility to pay.

    I'd really appreciate any comments.

    Thank you

    Hello Chicadeb,

It is not dangerous at all, but even safe.

Telephone and Internet services are contracted in a individual´s name, not in a property´s name, therefore the tenant should set up the contract in his/her name and if they stop paying bills, the responsbility is theirs. Normally, they will cancel the contract when they leave the rented property.

You should definitely have your tenant set up the telephone line in their own name, and not in your name. It is best just to be careful and not have to deal with the worst case scenario.
