How can a pregnant, illegal Moroccan migrant gain residency for herself and child?

I am a Canadian author working on a story (fictional) about a pregnant Moroccan woman who enters Spain illegally by boat (her husband drowns) and ends up in an illegal migrant camp in southern Spain.

My question is: I know that a child born in Spain does not automatically get Spanish citizenship. But would having a child in Spain give this woman a better chance of getting residency? Would her education play a role in helping her (she has some college education and speaks English)? About how long would it take her to get residency and then citizenship?
