Hello, this is a really helpful forum, but I couldn't find the answer to my question. I have a Spanish mother (she is Spanish by birth), and am interested in also acquiring Spanish citizenship (I'm 25). How long is the average processing time for this? Is it still 2 years if I'm Spanish by origin? Is it faster if I apply directly in Spain instead of at a consulate?

Hello SpanishWanabee,

If your mother is Spanish by origin ( born to Spanish parents ), she can certainly apply for Spanish citizenship via the Spanish consulate. There have been recent modifications in the administrative regulations regarding Civil registry proceedings in connection with Nationality by residency applications - Instruction of 2nd October 2012 of the General Directorate of Registries and Notaries (http://www.boe.es/diario_boe/txt.php?id=BOE-A-2012-12808) - so the main idea is that the process will be resolved quicker than in the past, no matter if processed via the Consulate or directly in Spain. I believe the timing can be reduced in a year.

Once your mother has got the Spanish passport, you will first have easy access to residency in Spain as a relative to an EU citizen, and then you will be able to apply for your Spanish nationality as well, after a year.

You can click on this link to the Ministry of JusticeĀ“s website (http://www.mjusticia.gob.es/cs/Satellite/es/1215198282620/Estructura_P/1215198291413/Detalle.html) where you will be able to read specific information on the Nationality application process and requirements.
